One of the great things about working at TrainSignal is being around so many smart people. You literally learn something in almost every interaction, whether it’s a group lunch or passing chatter in the hallway. This morning, I was talking with Gosia Niklinski, TrainSignal Product Team Manager, about IT certification exams. She’s taken around 10 certification exams over the years, so she’s got some sage advice, particularly when it comes to second-guessing yourself.

If someone fails an exam, I always ask if they marked questions they weren’t sure of and went back and changed their answers. Don’t ever do this! Unless you’re 100 percent sure your first answer is wrong, don’t change it, because your initial gut instinct was probably right.

Sometimes, later questions will prove earlier answers wrong, and that’s also when it’s OK to change an earlier response. But almost always, second-guessing yourself is a sure way to fail an exam.

Do  you agree? What are some of your go-to test-taking tips? Tell us in the comments below or tweet us @TrainSignal!
