New VMware VCP5-IaaS Certification

For those of you interested in VMware virtualization, cloud, and certifications there was a big surprise last week. Being a vExpert I am usually informed, through some channel, of new VMware products and certifications. However, last week I was surprised to hear that VMware launched a new certification, the VCP5 – Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).

5 Reasons Why VCP-IaaS is Important

For those not involved in virtualization and cloud, let me explain why this new certification is so important. Here are 5 reasons:

  1. With over 100,000 current VMware Certified Professionals, having a new “stepping stone” certification is a way to distinguish yourself and being able to do it in infrastructure cloud computing has got to be one of the coolest ways to do it.
  2. VMware pushes their vCloud brand and their vCloud Director private and public infrastructure as a service product so it makes perfect sense to have a certification around it, prompting vSphere admins to learn and challenging them to prove their knowledge
  3. Microsoft recently accounted the new MCSE Private Cloud certification and, certainly, VMware must keep up and have a corresponding certification. If VMware didn’t already have this new cert in the works, they sure did react amazingly quickly to make it available.
  4. The VCP-IaaS will be the perfect launchpad for a whole new silo of VMware certifications covering cloud computing. I hope that next, VMware will add a VCAP – IaaS and a VCDX Cloud Infrastructure Architect.
  5. Cloud computing is the future of your datacenter — whether you use public or private clouds — and now is the time to learn about it.

What Virtualization Professionals Need to Know about VCP5-IaaS

Here are the critical facts about the new VCP-IaaS:

  • It is currently in BETA but you can sign up to be notified about the exam here.
  • According to Eric Sloof from NTPRO.NL, the current beta exam consists of 115 questions and a short pre-exam survey consisting of 8 questions. The passing score for this exam is 300, using a scaled scoring method.
  • According to David Marshall at VMBlog.com, “candidates interested in this certification should be capable of installing and configuring vCloud Director and related components, utilizing vCD to create and manage vApps, Service Catalogs, Organization/provider VDCs, and administering cloud enabled networking and storage.”

While it is too early to say for sure yet, as the exam blueprint hasn’t been released, it would appear that my vCloud Director Essentials Training would be a great fit to help you prepare for this awesome new VCP-IaaS certification.
